Assessment Centers: A Brief Orientation to the Process

Dennis Joiner & Associates (31 minutes)
Observe participants in four commonly used assessment center exercises, including; Leaderless Group Discussion, In-Basket Exercise, Oral Presentation Exercise, and Role-Playing Exercise. Commentary provides information on the rationale behind the use of each exercise, how the content of the exercise is determined, and the vale of assessment centers as part of the selection process.

Uniform Guidelines: Adverse Impact

Reviews legislation requiring compliance with the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures.  Defines key concepts, including; who is an applicant, racial/ethnic/gender groups, selection procedures, total selection process, employment decisions, relevant labor market, adverse impact, the 80% Rule, adverse impact threshold, and the Bottom Line. The video also discusses data collection systems, interpretation of the 2% Standard, and employer options when adverse impact is found.

This video is an example of a "realistic job preview" developed by the South Carolina Department of Corrections for use with its Corrections Officer selection battery.

Sampling & Estimation

The Media Guild (19 minutes)
This video opens with a scene of a corporate board meeting, where a decision is being made to market a new razor designed by the firm’s president. Using this tongue-in-cheek example, the video introduces the methods of statistical sampling, and demonstrates the important role these procedures have in a variety of decision making settings.

The Media Guild (28 minutes)
This video uses computer animation and vivid examples to explain elementary terms and concepts used in descriptive statistics, such as frequency distribution, measures of central tendency and dispersion.

Hypothesis Testing

This video presents four humorous but completely accurate and informative vignettes to explain and illustrate the use of concepts which are central to inferential statistics, including; sample selection, Type I and Type II errors, study design and analysis of results.

The Employment Application Process

Alabama Department of Personnel (35 minutes)
A series of short recruitment videos used for presentations at job fairs and other recruiting functions.

What Do You Think offers an engaging and upbeat picture of the Alabama Department of Personnel as a good place to work.

Accept the Challenge presents a series of brief vignettes in which state employees in a variety of occupations describe their jobs and the personal satisfaction derived from working for state government.

The Employment Application Process describes how an individual can apply for a state merit system job.

Though specific to Alabama, these videos present a content and format model for developing effective recruiting videotapes.

Job Analysis for Social Worker I (3 tapes)

Alabama Department of Personnel (approx. 4 hours)
This series of videotapes document "live" data collection during a multi-day group interview of Subject Matter Experts by an experienced (and very good) testing professional. The methods used to identify important work behaviors, develop lists of tasks relevant to those work behaviors, and the derivation of Knowledges, Skills and Abilities needed to perform the tasks are depicted.

These videos are used by the Alabama Department of Personnel as part of their training program for new professional staff, to demonstrate one method for conducting effective job analysis interviews.

Americans With Disabilities Act Conference (3 tapes)
Alabama Department of Personnel (approx. 4 hours)

These videotapes record a conference held in 1992 to describe and discuss the requirements, restrictions and obligations imposed by the ADA. Panelists included a civil rights attorney, labor law attorney, a senior personnel manager and a senior manager from the Alabama Office of Rehabilitation Services.

The conference was divided into eight segments, each having a different focus, as follows:

1. Overview of the ADA
2. General provisions and requirements
3. Discussion of the ADA provisions
4. Defining and documenting "Essential Job Functions"
5. Discussion of the principle of "Reasonable Accommodation"
6. Identifying disabilities and negotiating accommodations
7. Discussion of practical operational questions
8. Required documentation and conference summary

The conference videotapes were initially distributed to line agency managers and personnel headquartered in field offices throughout the state, to disseminate information about their responsibilities under the ADA. They are now being used as part of the training program for new professional staff in the Alabama Department of Personnel.

A Conversation with Charles Murray

New River Media (45 minutes)
An interview with Dr. Charles Murray by Ben Wattenburg on the "Think Tank" television show. The topic of the interview was Murray’s controversial book The Bell Curve.

The videotape is available for preview here at the MAPAC meeting, and can be requested from the MAPAC library.
