News from the Executive Council

by Kaye Evleth

The IPMA Executive Council met in March for our mid-year meeting. The two topics on which we directed the majority of our attention were:

1. Approval of the work plan associated with the Long-Range Strategies; and

2. Selection of a new IPMA Executive Director.

Long-Range Strategies

As I reported in the last issue of ACN, the Executive Council voted last October to focus our efforts as an organization in six strategic areas: professional development, internal organizational coordination, marketing and membership development, information exchange and technology, international role, and resource management. This session we refined these goals and added Assessment Services, Representation, and the Annual Training Conference as areas deserving continued emphasis.

Several of these goals will have standing committees to compile information, make recommendations, and facilitate coordination. In addition, a review and report of the progress toward the accomplishment of each of the strategic goals will be a standing agenda item at each Executive Council meeting. Our intention is to ensure that the organization's activities and resources are continuously directed toward programs that will advance these objectives.

IPMA Executive Director

Don Tichenor has announced his retirement on September 1, 1996. After twenty years of working to create a financially strong organization, he has decided it is time to pass the baton. The Executive Council is responsible for appointing the new Executive Director, and we took our responsibility seriously. After identifying the duties and KSA's important to the Executive Director position, we decided to conduct an internal recruitment.

The result of our efforts is the appointment of Neil Reichenberg as the IPMA Executive Director. Neil has been with IPMA for a number of years, most recently serving as the organization's link to the legal and legislative issues that abound in Washington, D.C. and beyond. He has provided the IPMAAC Board with updates on myriad topics, including the ADA, Affirmative Action, ADEA, Police Officers' Bill of Rights, and recent court cases.

Additional Important Topics

The IPMA Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing Committee, most members of which are active IPMAAC members, has reviewed the draft APA Standards and prepared a response which was approved by the Executive Council. The Committee will remain active to ensure continuity of thought until the Standards revision has been completed. Nancy Abrams, IPMAAC committee chair, is the contact for questions or comments.

For those of you planning ahead with an interest in attending the IPMA International Training Conference, the following is our six-year schedule:

1996 Las Vegas, Nevada

1997 Minneapolis, Minnesota

1998 Orlando, Florida

1999 Washington, D.C.

2000 San Francisco, California

2001 Nashville, Tennessee

As a final note, one of my goals has been to provide for IPMAAC's involvement in other conferences. This year Kristine Smith and I are presenting an IPMAAC-sponsored panel entitled "From Selection to Termination: The Value of a Job Analysis" at the Western Region Conference in May and the IPMA International Training Conference in October. Last year, at my request, the Western Region Board approved a resolution to include IPMAAC participation in their yearly conferences. Further, I represented IPMAAC as a speaker at the Federal Section conferences in Washington, D.C., and San Diego.

Additionally, IPMAAC has been and will be honored with the participation of the IPMA Federal Section President and the Western Region Executive Council Representative at our conference. Last year Lynn Maddox-Masiello, Federal Section, and Eileen Bitten, Western Region, enjoyed New Orleans, and this year David Orr, Federal Section, and Susan Toy Stern, Western Region, will be joining us in Boston. This is the start of a beautiful friendship.
